Rita and Google Earth overlays

I was browsing the Hurricane Rita path on the NOAA website, and then realized that Google Earth does image overlays. So I turned NOAA's boring picture into fascinating 3D views of the hurricane path. Currently, it's slated to miss Austin, make landfall at Matagorda Bay, take US-77 to Temple and Waco and then go on over Forth Worth.
You can click on the pictures below. You can also download the Google Earth KMZ file (including the overlay jpg) here.

dang, I have to run, and have band practice after that, so I can't make it. I sent it to Phillip Torrone who writes for Popular Science and Make Magazine. Hopefully this will end-up on Make Magazine blog...

It is fairly spiff. Watching the file list as it installed on my win32 gaming machine, it seems to be qt3 based. *cross fingers, knock wood, hope for osx and/or linux versions some day*

(Anonymous): GoogleEarthHacks.com has TONS of downloadable overlays

You need a free account to donload files but it only takes a second. They even have weather forecast overlays that automaticly update.

I heard this morning that even though the eye is going to miss us, we're still expected to get tropical storm strength winds.

Looks like a good weekend to paint!

[info]nugget: Re: NOAA/CMU/NASA...

Don't bother. Google Earth uses far too much flashy 3D crap to be even remotely usable in Virtual PC. I tried, it was a total failure.

Thank you SO much for these, especially the 2nd one. I'm a new enough Texas resident that I'm still fuzzy locating exactly where things are on the outline map.

Yep. It's going to go just about over me.

does it auto update? (like is it pulling the latest image from that source? or is it just overlaying a static image?)

[info]ivo

When I posted the article with the first 3 images, it was static. Later, in the 4th picture --where I added the sattelitte cloud cover--, both the cloud cover and strike prob map automatically update every 15 minutes over the web from their source URLs.

(Anonymous): new KMZ?

Absolutely amazing! Can you put up a new version of the KMZ that includes the auto-update capability?
